Eoffs on Crooked Creek

The Eoffs were early settlers on Crooked Creek and a prominent clas of people. When this family reached Arkansas, in the early days there were only a few of them, but now they are numerous, and while some of them reside in Boone County, others of these people have scattered to other sections. As is well known, Uncle DAVE A. EOFF has served as sheriff of Boone County, Arkansas, for a number of years. Mr. WILLIAM A. EOFF, son of SAMUEL EOFF, gave me a short biographical sketch of this pioneer family.

He said UNCLE BILLY lived several years near Protem, Tanney County. He was born in Tennessee, in 1831. He said his parents settled on Crooked Creek when he was eleven years old. Where they located was known then as Carroll County, Arkansas. Two of his father's brothers, JOHN and ALECK, came with his parents from Tennessee.

"My grandfather, ISAAC EOFF, died in Tennessee," said he, "but my grandmother, PEGGIE EOFF, came to Arkansas with us".Ten years before we located on Crooked Creek, or in 1832, WILLIAM EOFF, another brother of my father, located here. DAVE NICHOLS came with him. NICHOLS was a noted Privitive Baptist preacher. Grandmother PEGGIE EOFF's was the first body buried in the graveyard on Uncle WILLIAM EOFF' s farm on Crooked Creek, which is four miles southeast of the present site of the town of Bellefonte. The remains of my Uncle WILLIAM EOFF rest here, too. This cemetery is sometime known as Union Church Graveyard. "My Uncle ALECK EOFF died in Ozark County, Missouri. "HUMPY" JOHN EOFF was ALECK'S son and DAVE EOFF is a son of "HUMPY"JOHN EOFF. I cannot tell you whereabouts in Ozark County ALECK's death occurred nor the place of his burial. Uncle JOHN EOFF, the oldest of grandfather's sons, is buried on his old farm on Crooked Creek, six miles from Bellefonte. My father is buried at Wilcox's Mill, in Newton County, Arkansas. My mother is buried on Crooked Creek, one mile east of Uncle WILLIAM EOFF's land. Her body rests on my father's old farm.

Uncle BILLY EOFF, my informant, is about seventy-six years old at the present writing. He and his aged wife have been living alone a part of the time. Both are greatly respected. The old couple talk freely of the by gone days on Crooked Creek.
